Your Work

By Denise Pare-Watson

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.

And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

—Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple

Make sure your work, whatever it is, gives an indication of your passion, your creativity, and your spirit.

Be proud of your work!

If you are mentoring someone or teaching someone new skills, make sure that you take the time to teach them to stand back and look at their work accomplishments with pride.

This was something I started with my very young children when they started assisting with simple chores, like making their beds.

They were so pleased with their accomplishments.

I often watched them in their play (I am a play geek), concentrating so hard on what they were doing.

It was fascinating watching them attain skills purely by trying over and over again.

Playing is their work.  Their work is playing.

This is their work.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said:

“If a man is called to be a street-sweeper,

he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted,

or Beethoven composed music,

or Shakespeare wrote poetry.

He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say,

‘Here lived a great street-sweeper who did his job well.”

This was their work.

Paths We have travelled | urbnspice.com

Our journeys through life take us down many paths.

You will have many opportunities to share your passion through your work, even if the path does not always seem clear.

Take any opportunity to share your knowledge, your passion, your skills, and your thoughts.

Pay it forward.

This is your work.

A Super Soup Day – Pork Lentil Soup

By Denise Pare-Watson

The Inspiration of Urbnspice Series

It is a soup kind of day today………….what shall it be? Creamy tomato? Pantry soup? Crisper soup? Or perhaps Beef, Barley and Lentil?  Today, it will be Pork Lentil Soup.  It is comfort in a bowl.  A Super Soup Day it is.

To quote one of my favourite chef personalities, James Barber, who left his footprint on my culinary path.

“I love making soups – I could make bathtubs full of soup”.

James Barber

I will always remember that he left us the same way he inspired us:  reading a cookbook at his dining room table with a pot of chicken soup bubbling on the stove.  Thank you, James Barber!

National Caramel Custard Day

By Denise Pare-Watson

Did you know that there is such a holiday called National Caramel Custard Day?

There is an unofficial holiday celebrated annually on October 3rd.  It is also called National Crème Caramel Day. This sweet traditional treat is also known as flan or creme caramel custard.

Creme Brulee

Crème caramel was a menu item in my previous workplace that never lost status. When the menu went through its typical seasonal changeover, crème caramel remained a constant favourite. It is surprisingly easy to make with simple ingredients. My preference is to make individual crème caramel portions and serve them with a crisp tuile cookie garnish.

There are many desserts that fall into the category of custards. To name a few: crème brulée; pot de crème; pannacotta; Spanish flans; Italian Budino; pastry cream; Sabayon, English pouring custard or Crème Anglaise.   English Pouring custard has many names:  vanilla sauce, creme anglaise, pouring sauce, and custard sauce.

Technically speaking, other types of desserts fall into the custard category, such as pecan pie; cheesecake; pumpkin pie, and rice puddings are all types of custards.
